Lesson 2: Color, Expression, and Feeling

September 25, 2025 Megan Wells

If you want to make sure your soft pastel drawings don’t smudge once you’re finished, try using a spray fixative to ensure the pastel stays put!

In the center of a piece of cardstock, draw a rectangle measuring 1” x 1 ¼”

  1. Cut out the rectangle using an exacto blade

  2. Voila! You have a viewfinder!

If the orientation of your drawing/painting is square, just cut a square viewfinder!

Supplies

September 25, 2025 Megan Wells

We will use pretty basic supplies in this class! So gather the following for each lesson:

Lesson 1:

Black and white paper (construction or cardstock)

Scissors

Glue Stick

Ruler/Straight Edge

Pencil

Optional: exacto blade

Lesson 2:

Soft pastels (I used both Alphacolor soft pastels and Prismacolor NuPastel Color Sticks)

Construction paper, cardstock, or colored illustration board

Sketchbook/drawing paper (my absolute favorite sketchbook is a Canson Mixed Media Spiral Bound Sketchbook)

Pencil

Lesson 3:

**In this lesson, feel free to use whatever medium you choose to create a larger piece. I will be working with acrylic paints and a 16” x 20” stretched canvas.**

Pencil

Sketchbook/paper
